Abstract
This thesis introduces an autoethnographic, arts-based study examining my transformation from a child who navigated adversity, developed resilience, and experienced personal growth to become a fulfilled teacher and scholar. When I retired from teaching at 59, I wondered how I was able to transform my life when so many children could not overcome their own personal challenges. What was it about me? Did I have luck on my side? Did I happen upon something out of the ordinary? I began to reflect deeply on how kids who appear apathetic or rudderless in the classroom could be inspired to rise above their personal backstories and achieve their own vision of success. In this investigation, I draw on my lived experiences to explore my trajectory from an arduous and abusive upbringing to becoming a joyful adult with decades of experience as an educator of infants, children and youth. This study illuminates the process of developing mindfulness and acquiring social-emotional skills as a means of empowerment and healing. I utilize robust self-examination in the context of my life and situate it in modern theories to increase our understanding of barriers some children face and, most importantly, to inspire them to transform and triumph.
